Year 2: Lovelace class

We are back in full swing after the Christmas break and eager to learn lots of exciting, new things this term!

Our English work begins with narrative writing.  We will start by looking at the features of narrative writing and practising our writing skills before eventually writing our own story based around our class story 'A Right Royal Disaster: Man on the Moon'.

We will be looking at special books in our RE lessons, books that are used during Mass.  The main focus will, of course, be the Bible – the most special of books.  We will learn about how the Bible is organised and listen to stories from both the Old and the New Testaments.   Following this, our next RE topic will be ‘The Eucharist’.  We will learn that the word Eucharist is another name for the Mass and that it actually means ‘Thanksgiving’.   It is a time when the parish family gathers to give thanks to God, most of all for the gift of Jesus, his Son.  This will prepare us for Easter, one of the most important events on the Christian calendar.

The focus of our Science work will be 'Living Things & their Habitats'.  We’ll start by understanding why animals choose a particular habitat and how these habitats provide for the basic needs of different animals.  We will also look at what animals, including humans, depend upon for survival and the importance for humans of exercise, eating the right amounts of different types of food and hygiene.   Healthy eating will lead us into our next Design and Technology unit when we will be creating a healthy snack.

In our History work we will be learning about significant explorers, focusing on Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus, from the distant past and the more recent past.  It will be interesting to see how the different times affected their exploits!  In Geography, we will begin to understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom and of a small area in a contrasting non-European country.

We’re doing really well with our continued focus on being safe on the internet.  We are all aware that online-safety is very important.  Our computing work for the first half term will be using 2Calculate, a simple to use spreadsheet.  We will be copying and pasting totalling tools, using spreadsheets to add amounts and create a table and block graph.

For our PSHE work we will be studying the theme of Living in the Wider World.  This will involve focusing on money, what money is, looking after money and the difference between our needs and wants.  Later in the term we will focus on belonging to a group and how this looks in our own communities.

It’s going to be a busy term.  We will be working hard, but we’ll have lots of fun too!

100 Recommended Books

We have selected these recommended reading lists from Peters Education to ensure that our children have access to a wide range of books.  These books are all available in school and form our 'core' texts in our class libraries.  These lists are chosen because they:

  • link with our curriculum for each year group
  • represent different cultures
  • introduce children to new authors and expand their knowledge of familiar authors
  • ensure progression
  • match topics of interests for our children
  • tackle current themes.
