Year 1: Nightingale class
Autumn Term
Hello and welcome back! I hope you’ve all had a great summer and are looking forward to the start of the new school year. In the first term of Year 1 we will be learning about lots of new things and going on lots of adventures.
During the Autumn Term, we will be learning about our local area in Geography and Toys from the past in History. We will be reading and writing our own versions of ‘Harry the Happy Mouse’ and ‘Lost and Found’. In Maths, we will be learning our numbers to 10 and learning how to calculate single digit numbers using our addition and subtraction methods. We use lots of practical resources and there are always opportunities for collaborative learning. In Science, we are going to learn about animals and after half term we will look seasonal changes. During the Christmas period, we will be designing and making our moving Christmas cards.
We can't wait to show you all the exciting work we are going to be doing.
Useful Information
We have high expectations of our children and want them to be safe, be learners and be kind/respectful at all times.
We have recently reminded our children about health and safety in PE. We would like to remind families of our PE kit and important information about PE:
PE Uniform
Plain white t-shirt (School logo is not essential but t-shirts with logo can be purchased from school office)
Navy shorts
Black slip-on pumps
A blue draw-string bag
Trainers (outdoor use only)
Plain navy track suit (outdoor use only)
Jewellery should ideally not be worn in school for health and safety reasons. Children are not permitted to wear earrings during PE lessons..
Long hair should be tied back at all times.
For Gymnastics, children will be in bare feet. Please let us know if this presents any issues.
Children wearing tights will be asked to remove them for PE lessons so you may wish to include a pair of socks in the PE bag.
Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit for PE (Our class' PE days are Wednesday & Friday) as they will be unable to participate fully in lessons without it and this can be upsetting for children
Our Behaviour Charter
Our school Behaviour Policy is built upon the ‘5 pillars of Pivotal Practice’ (‘When Adults Change, Everything Changes’, Paul Dix):
Consistent, calm adult behaviour,
Relentless Routines,
First attention to best conduct,
Scripting difficult conversations,
Restorative Follow-up.
We have three simple goals: Be safe, Be a Learner, Be Kind and Respectful.

Recommended Reading Books
We have selected these recommended reading lists from Peters Education to ensure that our children have access to a wide range of books. These books are all available in school and form our 'core' texts in our class libraries. These lists are chosen because they:
- link with our curriculum for each year group
- represent different cultures
- introduce children to new authors and expand their knowledge of familiar authors
- ensure progression
- match topics of interests for our children
- tackle current theme
