''I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

Philippians 4:13

We wanted to take this opportunity to welcome all the Year 5 children and families into our class this year. We hope that you find all the information you need here but if you want to find out more, please check our stories on Class Dojo. As always, we are here to make this a memorable year for your child, let’s work together to ''Love, Inspire and Shine.''

Homework

Homework will be set on a Friday and is due in the following Thursday. In Year 5, this will include a Maths and English focused activity each week set on Purple Mash. Further to this, the children have access to TTRockstars.

Reading Books

In Year 5, children are encouraged to read appropriate novels and non-fiction books regularly from our school Reading Scheme. We encourage the children to read at appropriate times in the school day and ask that the read everyday at home too. They should record this in their school diary at least three times a week.

Worship and Reflection Areas.

We have a dedicated worship and reflection area in class. Here the children are encouraged to spend time reflecting upon the teachings of Jesus Christ and consider how they fulfil each of our Christian values both at school and at home. In Year 5, the children also begin to plan and lead worship and in this area, have access to the resources they need to do so.

General Reminders

  • Our PE days are Monday and Wednesdays (Johnson) and Monday and Thursdays (Parks) Parks class will be swimming in their Monday PE slots until Christmas.
  • The children will also need their own water bottle in school, which they have access to all day. Please make sure that they are clearly labelled and are not too big.
  • Please note that large school bags do not fit in our cloakrooms so please ensure these are small.
  • Earrings are not permitted to be worn in school and children will be asked to remove these if they are wearing them.
  • Black school shoes to be worn at all times (Trainers are only permitted for PE)
  • Long hair must be tied back.

Our school Behaviour Policy is built upon the ‘5 pillars of Pivotal Practice’ (‘When Adults Change, Everything Changes’, Paul Dix):

  • Consistent, calm adult behaviour,

  • Relentless Routines,

  • First attention to best conduct,

  • Scripting difficult conversations,

  • Restorative Follow-up.

We have three simple goals: Be safe, Be a Learner, Be Kind and Respectful.

Year 5 Recommended Reading Books

We have selected these recommended reading lists from Peters Education to ensure that our children have access to a wide range of books.  These books are all available in school and form our 'core' texts in our class libraries.  These lists are chosen because they:

  • link with our curriculum for each year group
  • represent different cultures
  • introduce children to new authors and expand their knowledge of familiar authors
  • ensure progression
  • match topics of interests for our children
  • tackle current themes
